Congratualtions! Your application has been successful and you are selected for interview.
Now you need to prepare thoroughly to demonstrate why you should be accepted onto the programme. Here’s my top tips for success…
1. Take time to prepare
Fail to prepare, and you prepare to fail. So always take enough time to plan ahead.
Read your application a number of times so that you remember the specific examples you may have use and be prepared to emphasise the key things in your CV.
You should also do plenty of research in to the institution and programme again before your interview: what subjects specifically are you looking forward to taking? Are there any clubs or societies you want to join or think that you can contribute to on campus? Essentially, make sure you’ve done your homework.
2. Define Your Career Goals
You should know, and practice your answer in response, how the postgraduate course you are applying for fits your future career goals. This is really important because it will highlight your commitment, that you know where you want the programme to take you, and will help you stand out to the admissions tutor.
There are a number of common questions in postgraduate interviews – discussion around your strengths and weaknesses, for example – but you should take the lead in spelling out exactly why you want a place on the course.
3. Look the Part
Appearances do matter, and even though postgraduate interviews are generally less formal than job interviews, you still need to show that you are serious and wearing the right attire is important.
Equally, if you are doing your interview over Skype, you need to prepare similarly. Ensure you are in a quiet place with good internet connection and that the environment around you is appropriate.
Finally, looking the part is also about being clear and confident. Sit up straight, maintain eye contact and try to breathe calmly and avoid speaking too fast.
